Estimated alcohol-attributable health burden in Aotearoa New Zealand

This set of resources developed by the University of Otago for Te Whatu Ora are the result of a project that estimates the alcohol-attributable health burden in Aotearoa in 2018. The research findings show that alcohol causes a significant preventable health burden through a range of disease and injury conditions, especially for Māori and males. The resources include:

In June 2022, Te Whatu Ora | Health Promotion, along with nib foundation, co-funded University of Otago, Wellington (UOW) researchers to undertake a research and advocacy project titled 'Understanding and addressing adolescent alcohol harm'.

Interventions to reduce alcohol’s harms to health: A modelling study

This research project used modelling techniques to estimate the health impacts of alcohol interventions and their contribution towards health equity in the Aotearoa context. The research was conducted by a team from the University of Otago and the Northern Regional Alliance, and was funded by Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand (previously Te Hiringa Hauora).

Attitudes and behaviours on supplying alcohol to under 18s

Studies show that parental social supply is more likely to contribute to increased alcohol use, and increased risk of alcohol-related harm later in life. Despite this, New Zealand adults reported to have socially suppled alcohol to under 18-year-olds in the last year.

Social supply of alcohol to under 18s

Alcohol consumption by young people aged under 18 years (‘under 18s’) increases the risk of adverse physical and cognitive development, other alcohol-related harms, and alcohol-use disorders later in life. Social supply is the supply of alcohol to individuals under the minimum purchase age by parents, guardians, friends, or others.

The development and implementation of an enhanced digital alcohol screening...

The aim of this project was to explore whether an improved alcohol screening tool for older adults could be integrated within primary health care settings. This report describes the development and implementation of this tool, which is designed to help health professionals identify and manage older adults at risk of alcohol-related harm.

2020 Health and Lifestyles Survey: Top line

This top-line summary provides a high-level overview of results from the 2020 Health and Lifestyles Survey (HLS). The HLS monitors short, medium, and long-term societal changes in attitudes, knowledge, and behaviours related to mental health and wellbeing, tobacco use, vaping, gambling, nutrition, alcohol, and sun exposure. The HLS also tracks changes in views about the social desirability and acceptability of various strategies to minimise harm from these risk factors and promote wellbeing. This summary focuses on the prevalence of these risk factors, exposure to harm, and strategies to minimise harm.

Impact of COVID-19 August/September 2021 Topline results – Wave 3
