Attitudes towards drinking alcohol during pregnancy - Fact Sheet

This fact sheet is an analysis of data about alcohol and pregnancy collected in HPA’s 2013 Attitudes and Behaviour towards Alcohol Survey (ABAS). ABAS is an annual survey about alcohol that focuses on New Zealander’s drinking behaviour and attitudes towards alcohol use. It includes one question on the acceptability of drinking small amounts of alcohol during pregnancy.

Alcohol-related attitudes in 2010, 2012, and 2014

The Health and Lifestyles Survey (HLS) is a cross-sectional survey conducted every two years with a nationally-representative sample of New Zealand adults (aged 15 years and over). This report uses data from the 2010, 2012, and 2014 HLS to examine time trends in people’s attitudes and experiences relating to the availability and promotion of alcohol. It also uses the 2014 HLS data to assess differences in these alcohol-related attitudes by socio-demographic factors and drinking behaviour.

This fact sheet assesses whether the prevalence of risky alcohol consumption (defined as high levels of alcohol consumption on a single occasion) among New Zealand adults varied according to smoking status. The analysis was undertaken using the HPA’s 2014 Health and Lifestyles Survey (HLS).

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy. A literature review

This research reviews available New Zealand and selected overseas research about drinking alcohol during pregnancy. Areas covered in the report include drinking patterns, the predictors of alcohol use during pregnancy, the impact of socio-demographic factors on drinking during pregnancy, women’s knowledge of and attitudes towards drinking during pregnancy, primary prevention campaign planning and communication strategies, and the role of health care providers.

Insights from women about drinking alcohol during pregnancy

This report discusses the findings of new qualitative research on insights from women about drinking alcohol during pregnancy. The research involved interviews with 24 pregnant women or recent mothers who either held the attitude that it’s not OK to drink at all or it’s OK to drink a little occasionally. Women were asked about: their attitudes and behaviours towards drinking alcohol during pregnancy, factors influencing drinking during pregnancy and the role of influencers (ie the people in their lives who provide information, advice and social pressure).

The Health Promotion Agency (HPA) monitors parents and caregivers’ opinions on food marketing to children in the Health and Lifestyles Survey (HLS). Results from the 2012 HLS are presented below. Parents and caregivers were asked how much they generally support or oppose a ban on food advertising at times when children watch TV. The response options include “strongly support”, “support”, “neither support nor oppose”.

The Health Promotion Agency (HPA) undertakes the Sun Exposure Survey (SES) every three years. The purpose of this ongoing research is to collect consistent information on attitudes and behaviours towards sun exposure, to facilitate comparison with historical survey data, and to inform future decision making in the sun safety and skin cancer prevention sector. This report provides an overview of findings for the youth sample (13-24 years, combining the teen and younger adult samples) of the 2013 SES.

This research was undertaken to understand how risky gambling behaviours, gambling-related harm, and related life situations change over time. HPA will use the findings to help identify how and when interventions can be developed to recognise risky gambling early on and to minimise gambling-related harm to individuals, families, and communities.
