What a bed lever is
A bed lever is a tool that helps you:
- get on and off bed
- sit from a lying position in bed
- roll to the side and be able to sit safely on the side of bed.
Most bed levers have a maximum weight capacity. Your occupational therapist will make sure you get a lever that is right for you.

1
Attach cord to wooden block and place under the mattress
Thread the cord through the 2 holes and tie a knot at the loose end.
Put the block on the opposite side of the bed to where you want the bed lever.
Take the cord and move around the bed to where the bed lever is going to be. Make sure the cord slides under the mattress. Pull it tight so the small block is firmly against the side of the bed.
You could also use the bed lever to lift the mattress up and pass the cord underneath to the other side.

2
Attach the cord to the bed lever
Thread the cord through the hold in the bed lever, from the bottom to the top.

3
Push the bed lever in between the mattress and bed base
Pull the cord tight as you do this.

4
Thread the cord though the hole in the plastic cleat
The cleat is found at the base of the metal loop.

5
Hold the cord tight and finish pushing the bed lever in
Make sure the bed lever is firm against the mattress with no gap.
Check the bar of the bed lever is at least 318mm (31.8cm) from the wall or headboard.

6
Secure the cord by pulling it forwards and upwards
The cord should catch in the V of the cleat 'locking it off'.

7
Put excess cord under the mattress to avoid hazards
Use the supplied twist tie or a rubber band to bundle the excess cord together.
