The Health and Lifestyles Survey (HLS) is a biennial monitor of the health behaviour and attitudes of New Zealand adults aged 15 years and over, and parents and caregivers of 5 to16-year-olds, first carried out in 2008. The HLS is managed by HPA and collects information relating to HPA’s programme areas of alcohol, tobacco control, sun safety, minimising gambling harm, nutrition and physical activity, mental health and immunisation. This methodology report details the procedures and protocols followed to ensure the HLS produces high quality, robust data.

Electronic gaming (‘pokie’) machines provide a continuous form of gambling, where winnings can be immediately reinvested. Playing pokie machines in non-casino gaming venues, such as pubs or bars, is the gambling activity most commonly associated with gambling harms such as spending more time or money gambling than intended. HPA’s 2012 Health and Lifestyles Survey (HLS) assessed the public’s preferences for and against non-casino electronic gaming machine venues.

HPA is responsible for delivering a programme focused on minimising gambling harm, which includes a mass media campaign, the development of resources, and research and evaluation. This research was undertaken to help inform a campaign on host responsibility in Class 4 venues as part of HPA’s programme. This report provides an overview of findings from interviews with 18 staff and 14 people with experience gambling in Class 4 venues, focused on perceptions of EGM behaviours, interactions in the EGM area, host responsibility, and future change.

This research was undertaken in order to evaluate the Kiwi Lives III campaign, which is part of a national social marketing programme to minimise gambling harm. HPA will use the findings to understand the impact of the campaign and to direct its future strategic development.
