The Smoke-free Environments (Controls and Enforcement) Amendment Act 2011 (the Amendment Act) amended the Smoke-free Environments Act 1990 to prohibit the display of tobacco products at any sales outlet.1 The provision came into force on 23 July 2012.

One of the most effective tools to reduce tobacco consumption and prevalence is to increase the price of tobacco. Participants in the 2012 Youth Insights Survey (YIS) were asked about whether they wanted to stop smoking, whether they had tried to quit in the past year (12 months), and whether they were smoking at the time of the survey. Responses were examined by ethnicity, gender, school decile status and early smoking uptake (whether or not respondent first tried a cigarette before age 10).
