Attitudes to smokefree bars among New Zealand bar managers. Full report

This study assesses bar managers’ overall support for workplace smoking bans and their perceptions of the impact of smoking bans on venue revenue and individual rights. A cohort study of bar managers was undertaken to assess any changes in support over time and factors influencing these changes.

In December 2003, amendments to the Smoke-free Environments Act (1990) required all workplaces in New Zealand, including bars, to be completely smokefree indoors from 10 December 2004. Before this requirement came into effect, the Ministry of Health wanted to find out how bar managers felt about the introduction of smokefree bars.

The aim of the research was to develop an overview of liquor bans in New Zealand by virtue of reviewing and analysing the available local literature, including four formal evaluations of liquor bans and press reports for the period from July 2003 to June 2004 inclusive. From this a framework to reduce smoking initiation in Aotearoa-New Zealand was established, setting out practical actions for implementation.
