The Health and Lifestyles Survey (HLS) is a monitor of the health behaviour and attitudes of New Zealand adults aged 15 years and over, and parents and caregivers. The HLS is managed by the Health Sponsorship Council(HSC) and collects information relating to the programme areas the HSC works in. These areas include tobacco control, sun safety, problem gambling and healthy eating.

The family environment is an important influence on a wide range of social and health outcomes and there is general agreement that strong families lead to successful and healthy outcomes for family members. In 2007, around 100 New Zealand families and whānau participated in a study that explored how health issues are dealt with in the family setting.

This report summarises the literature relating to tobacco portrayals in the media, and youth smoking uptake. It explores how the media influences tobacco uptake and use; considers media use by New Zealand youth; examines instances of tobacco portrayals in the media; and looks at ways to counter and reduce smoking portrayals in the media.
