Ear clinic — Tairāwhiti

The Tairāwhiti mobile ear clinic is a service run by nurses. They offer free ear checks to children from birth until they leave school.

Where to find us

We visit primary and secondary schools and some early childhood centres in the mobile ear van.

We also run clinics at the:

Clinics are held on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Appointments are by referral only.


Services we provide

We assess:

  • ear discharge
  • middle ear fluid (glue ear)
  • wax build up
  • grommets
  • hearing concerns
  • speech concerns
  • ear pain.

We provide treatment including:

  • removing wax build up
  • removing objects that have been stuck in an ear
  • ear discharge treatment.

We might also make referrals for your child to see:

  • their GP or a practice nurse
  • an ear, nose and throat specialist at Gisborne Hospital
  • a private ear, nose and throat specialist in Tauranga, Hawkes Bay or Hamilton
  • the audiology department at Gisborne Hospital
  • a private audiologist
  • the learning support team, including speech-language therapists, or group special education.

Referrals can be made by:

  • your GP or practice nurse
  • ear, nose and throat specialists
  • paediatricians
  • Gisborne Hospital emergency department
  • your child development team
  • Well Child Tamariki Ora
  • teachers.
