The neonatal unit is on the ground floor of Gisborne Hospital, on Ward 4.

Services we provide
- Care for unwell or premature pēpi born in Tairāwhiti after 32 weeks of pregnancy.
- Transfer to Waikato neonatal intensive care unit for pēpi needing specialist services and care not provided in Tairāwhiti.
- Ongoing care for pēpi returning from a larger centre (once stable).
- Specialist paediatricians provide antenatal consultation and attend the birth for women with specific risk factors (for example, twin pregnancies).
- Assessment of babies in the hospitals' postnatal wards.
- Follow-up clinics after discharge, particularly for babies born prematurely or with other growth or development problems.
